David P. Lhota is a Registered Patent Attorney and Board Certified Intellectual Property Expert with the Florida Bar with over thirty (30) years of legal experience and four (4) years of technical experience as an Electrical Engineer with United Technologies Corp. His love of law and technology drives his success with patent, trademark and copyright protections, enforcement and contracts.
Mr. Lhota’s interdisciplinary background developed his unique approach to intellectual property law. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Tulane University, in 1987, beginning his professional career in the technology space working for the Sikorsky Aircraft and Hamilton Standard divisions of United Technologies Corp. as an electrical engineer. While working at Sikorsky Aircraft, he designed test stands for aircraft components and made visits to the patent law department which ignited a curiosity and interest in patent law. Mr. Lhota was intrigued by the patent process and the possibility of helping others safeguard their ideas and inventions. Not long after, he decided to attend law school, strengthening his technical foundation with a law degree and legal experience that began in law school as a law clerk for a local intellectual property (IP) law firm.
In 1994, Mr. Lhota graduated with his Juries Doctor Degree from the University of Miami School of Law. He immediately focused on IP Law, gaining valuable patent, trademark and copyright prosecution and litigation experience while expanding his knowledge of property asset protection for clients, from conception to marketing. He joined the law firm as an associate, eventually becoming a partner before opening his own law firm.
Today, Mr. Lhota has over 30 years of law experience employing his technical expertise to strategically support and protect his clients’ creativity and visions as they navigate legal and business obstacles. This includes intellectual property filings, legal proceedings, negotiating and drafting business deals and contracts helping his clients monetize their patents, trademarks and copyrights and enforcing and defending these rights by addressing infringement, unfair competition, copyright, trade secrets and Internet related issues.
His law firm, Lhota & Associates, P.A., practices a personalized approach to each case, assisting and representing clients in every legal step of realizing their idea, new business or product vision from conception to commercialization. The firm’s expertise spans numerous industries, including electronics, mechanical devices, software, Apps, medical, devices, AI technologies, construction, tools, security, sports technology and more.
CHARITABLE ENDEAVORS
Mr. Lhota devotes a lot of his spare time assisting nonprofits that benefit children. He is on the Board of Directors for the Big Children’s Foundation, Inc., a 501(c) non-profit corporation that assists, educates, and prepares at risk youths and youths in foster care for life when they age out of foster care. They provide a safe haven for after school and summer activities that entertain while teaching them life skills, such as, cooking, cleaning, finding jobs, preparing resumes and getting into college. Mr. Lhota also supports Johnny’s Popcorn Company, Inc., a philanthropic company that has conducted ten Global Vision Conferences to raise awareness about childhood hunger, and JFC For You, Inc., a 501(c) non-profit corporation. These organizations raise awareness and money for poor and disadvantaged children and help provide food and clothing and the enjoyment of movies and popcorn, as well as spending quality time with these forgotten children.
